Beijing Postcards is a company that specializes in modern Chinese history, with an emphasis on Beijing. The company collects visual interpretations of China through photographs, prints, and maps. Beijing Postcards also organizes walking tours, sells historic maps, and conducts research on topics relating to modern Chinese history.

We want to tell the important, but often forgotten, story of how Beijing’s Dashilar neighborhood played a pivotal role as the melting pot of Beijing. In so many ways this area - just outside the Qianmen Gate by Tiananmen Square - was the entrance point of everything from people and commerce to information and culture. And it’s a legacy that’s still felt today.

Jens is a Danish photographer and lawyer based in Beijing. As a photographer, he has collaborated with historians and urban planners to document Beijing’s rapid changes. The city’s history and its contrasts between the old and new continue to serve as an inspiring platform for his photography. His work has been featured by several news outlets including the Guardian, Huffington Post, and CNBC. He is also a contributor to Getty Images.

I love photographing and portraying Dashilar. I often come here around sunrise when the city is just waking up and it’s like taking a step back in time. There’s a beauty in how this quieter, older version of Beijing remains part of the city’s urban fabric—something I try to bring out in my photos.
